Blue November: Men’s Health Spotlight

The for-men counterpart to Pink October, Blue November is well underway, which means it’s time to shine a spotlight on prostate health.

Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer among men. Every year, well over 200,000 new cases are reported in the United States alone. The good news is that prostate cancer is both detectable and manageable at early stages.

At NuSerenity, we proudly advocate for men’s health by offering Blue November prostate health treatments, including screening. Our other customizable services, including vitamin shots, IV therapy, and more, are designed to keep you healthy and active. Staying as holistically healthy as you can for as long as you can will help lower your risk of many health concerns, prostate cancer included.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about how to promote prostate health, symptoms to look out for, and more.

Prostate Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention

First and foremost, it’s important to understand that none of the risk factors associated with prostate cancer have been established as a definite cause. In other words, there is no guarantee that minimizing your risk factors will allow you to avoid prostate cancer, but it will still be less statistically likely.

Here are some of the most common risk factors associated with prostate cancer according to the scientific literature:

  • Heredity: If someone in your immediate family has had prostate cancer, your risk is higher.
  • Race: African American men carry a higher risk than Caucasian men.
  • Age: Prostate cancer risk increases steadily with age.
  • Weight: Researchers have established a positive association between obesity and prostate cancer risk.
  • Lifestyle: Men who follow a sedentary lifestyle have a higher risk of prostate cancer.
  • Exposure: Exposure to various substances, including Agent Orange, have been shown to increase prostate cancer risk.
  • Diet: Poor dieting in general will ultimately increase prostate cancer risk by contributing to obesity, but specifically, excessive dairy and calcium intake may also increase your risk.

While some of these prostate cancer risk factors (age, race, etc.) are of course out of your control, the convenient thing about the rest of them is that you can check all of the boxes off at once by simply following a healthy lifestyle. Exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, follow a balanced diet, minimize or refrain from alcohol and cigarettes, and so on.

Early Detection Is King: Prostate Cancer Screening for Men

The prostate releases an enzyme referred to as prostate-specific antigen, or PSA. Normally, a small amount of PSA should be detected in the bloodstream. However, when the prostate is injured or affected by disease, PSA levels will rise—this is one way to screen for prostate health. The other method is a digital rectal examination, which is typically not performed without PSA testing.

The best time to go in for prostate screening can vary considerably based on several personal factors, including your level of risk (per above), age, and more. Most sources agree that low-to-moderate risk men should begin screening somewhere between the ages of 50 and 55. High-risk men are often recommended to test as early as 40.

Wherever you land on the risk spectrum, NuSerenity offers comfortable and accurate prostate cancer screening for men. Testing early and often is the single most important component to staying ahead of prostate issues, followed by mindful and consistent preventive practices like healthy dieting and exercise.
